General info:

The course is provided in blended e-learning mode using the Moodle platform of the ISIS A. Malignani and the whole teaching material will be available on-line. Teaching methods include lectures, classroom exercises, and laboratory activities.

Objectives:

The course aims at providing students with the knowledge and methods to deal with the analysis, design, implementation, operation, maintenance and management of telecommunication systems. The course also intends to provide an in-depth knowledge of the architectures, protocols and standards for telecommunication services and computer networks.

Course content:

  • Fundamentals of electrical circuits theory and electrotechnics
  • Fundamentals of time-independent (combinatorial) logic and sequential logic in digital electronics
  • Fundamentals of analog electronic circuits, overlook of semiconductor devices, BJT and MOS transistors, operational amplifiers, electronic filters
  • Fundamental of systems theory, systems modelling and analysis
  • Fourier series and frequency-domain characterisation of signals, fundamentals of signal theory, frequency response of a filter
  • Guided transmission media (twisted pair cables, coaxial cables, and optical fibers) and unguided transmission media (electromagnetic wave propagation, radio communications, and antennas)
  • Baseband and passband analog and digital transmission systems
  • Shannon sampling theorem, numeric conversion of an analog signal, ADC and DAC converters
  • Analog modulation systems (SSB, DSB, AM, FM), frequency division multiplexing and use of the frequency spectrum, digital baseband and passband modulation systems (FSK, PSK, PAM, QAM)
  • Evaluation of the performance of transmission systems
  • Digital systems and data, channel capacity, channel coding, error correction code
  • Circuit-switched networks and the public switched telephone network (PSTN)
  • Packet-switched networks
  • Laboratory activities
